Modular design is not new

Modular clothing is often presented as an innovation, yet it is rooted in history. As early as the Middle Ages, garments were designed with detachable elements, especially sleeves, allowing wearers to transform the same outfit according to occasion or status. This practice even gave rise to the French expression ''C’est une autre paire de manche'', literally referring to changing sleeves. Modularity has long been a practical design solution. Today, it re-emerges as a response to modern challenges.

Why modular wardrobes make sense today

A modular wardrobe allows more looks from fewer garments. By designing pieces that connect and adapt, one system can replace multiple outfits. This approach reduces the need to constantly buy new clothes while extending the life of each piece. Fewer items, worn in more ways, over a longer time. In a context of overproduction and underuse, modularity offers a logical answer: doing more with less, by design.

Modularity does not automatically mean sustainability

However, modularity alone is not enough. A modular garment is not sustainable by default. Other essential criteria must be considered: where and how the clothing is produced, working conditions, choice of materials, traceability, certifications, durability, end of life, and packaging. Without these elements, modularity risks becoming a design feature rather than a responsible solution.

Sustainability must be designed from the start

A truly sustainable wardrobe cannot be fixed after creation by simply replacing one material with a more ''eco alternative''. Sustainability must be integrated from the very beginning of the design process. When modularity is combined with responsible production, thoughtful material choices, and long-term use in mind, it becomes a powerful tool. In that sense, modular wardrobes are not just a trend, they are an example of how sustainability should be embedded in fashion by design, not added afterwards.s
